New Council Flats

For seventy years four little
blocks of council flats sat
at the edge of the little
council estate on the wide
grassy area, sixteen little
one bedroom flats between
cul de sac and playing fields.

After their demolition lay a
vast muddy swathe to be covered
with blocks of six little flats,
thirty in place of sixteen.

Blocks of flats arising on the
grassy mud, tools screeching,
clanging against scaffolding
behind wire netting barriers,
vans, trucks, lining the roadside
all to double council flats space
to meet the earthquake laws.

Now repeat for the other two
clusters of blocks of flats.
